High Point Resident Shares Her Breast Cancer Journey
Julia Gay, a resident of High Point, believes that a routine mammogram played a crucial role in saving her life. After undergoing the screening, she received an unexpected phone call from the breast cancer center in Greensboro informing her that her biopsy tested positive for cancer. Gay had no prior family history of breast cancer and had not experienced any symptoms, making the diagnosis particularly surprising.
The Role of Advanced Technology in Early Detection
Gay credits advances in breast cancer research and technology for enabling her medical team to detect the disease at an early stage. "Thanks to the advanced research and technology about breast cancer, they were able to catch it early," she said. Gay emphasized that had she not gone in for the routine mammogram, her story could have ended very differently.
Support and Care Team
Upon receiving her diagnosis, the breast cancer center helped Gay assemble a care team, which included both a surgeon and an oncologist. With these specialists, she began the process of treatment and healing, approaching the new chapter in her life with acceptance and courage.
Raising Awareness During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when communities across the Triad region and beyond participate in efforts to increase awareness and raise funds for a cure. Gay hopes her experience will encourage others to prioritize early detection through regular screenings and mammograms.
Upcoming Community Event: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Individuals are invited to join survivors and their supporters on October 24 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" event, which supports awareness and research efforts.
The Importance of Regular Screenings
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Experts recommend that women stay vigilant about routine mammograms and breast cancer screening as they remain key tools in early detection, potentially saving lives even in the absence of symptoms or family history.
